NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) was designed by John Grinder and Richard Bandler in the 1970’s after they realised that, by modelling excellence in others, people could make big changes with little effort and with immediate effect.
Do you want to be better at public speaking? Model someone who is a great speaker. Notice their tone, stance, gestures.
Want to be a hypnotherapist? Study with the top hypnotists in the world. That’s what I did.
Maybe you want more confidence. Who do you most admire for their confident manner? Imagine yourself in their shoes. How great do they feel when they look in the mirror? What internal dialogue are they running?
Many people have a movie running in their mind all day long. For some it’s a positive movie. These people always seem to be the lucky ones, don’t they? They get that new job, they meet the perfect partner, they are always upbeat and happy.
Then there are the people who run the negative movies. As Mark Twain said:
"I’ve been through some terrible things in my
life and some of them
actually happened"
If you focus on the negative, that’s what you get.
You may have internal dialogue running on a loop. "I can’t..." "I’m not good enough..." "I don’t deserve..."
With NLP a person can change channels and run positive messages. NLP concentrates on how you think (Neuro), how you communicate (Linguistic) and how best to use your thinking and communication (Programming) to achieve the results you want.
NLP is often used in Life Coaching. With NLP:
you determine what you want in life and how to go and get it
you discover what’s important to you
you understand how you and others tick
you understand what’s holding you back
