Fear of ....

Why am I afraid?

Fears and phobias are usually either linked to a specific event in the past or are a learned behaviour from someone else. Maybe a dog jumped up at you when you were little. Or perhaps your mother used to run away from wasps screaming. However our fear started, the more we experience it, the worse we get. It’s a gradual build up over time.

Why has my fear got worse?

Imagine for a moment that you are afraid of spiders. The unconscious mind loves to file similar events in nice, neat compartments so somewhere in your brain will be a file marked "Spiders" and every time you have had a frightening experience with a spider, the event has been stored in this file, along with the fear and emotion felt at the time. As more and more events are stored, you are feeling the emotions of all these past events so each encounter with a spider feels worse.

Add this to the movie and the internal dialogue that you are running in your mind and you have the success formula for a phobia.
