Everything we do in life we do to make ourselves feel better. If you are stuck in a bad habit, it’s because your unconscious mind thinks your behaviour in some way serves a purpose.
Whether we bite our nails, smoke, drink, overeat, overspend, gamble or take drugs, we do these things because at the time they make us feel good.
There are two reasons for holding on to bad habits.

there is an underlying negative emotion that triggers these behaviours
Or
It’s just a habit
Yes, sometimes it is just a behaviour that has served a purpose at some time in your life but is no longer needed and you have been left with a habit that you don’t want.
